You could say I became a wedding photographer to win a bet with myself. I had a horrible experience with the photographer at my own wedding and thought, “I could do better.” To prove it, I began practicing and doing test runs. My collection of camera equipment slowly expanded, and pretty soon I had my first gig with a young couple. They had a tight budget, and took a chance on me as a green photographer. They ended up being thrilled with the result and told all their friends and family about their wedding photographer – me. Best of all, I had won my bet.
Many weddings later, I am still very much in love with photography. My equipment keeps growing and I never tire of witnessing the true emotion and beauty of two people making a life-long commitment to each other. I shoot weddings hoping to make the experience more fun and as relaxing as possible for everyone involved while capturing every aspect of an unforgettable day.
I am comfortable suggesting poses and directing photo shoots, but strive to take photographs that are naturally beautiful rather than contrived. I believe that a good photo is more than the sum of its parts. Anyone with a good camera phone can take a technically sound image, but a good photo must capture the personality of the subject and his or her unfiltered reaction to the moment. A good photo must bubble with life, and that is what I strive to achieve with each click of my camera.
As a dear friend of mine put it, “Brian, you’re a creator, why do you waste your time doing other stuff? You enjoy crafting, building, writing, photography – do those and be happy”. So I do, and I am.
What’s my style? That’s easy: You are in there somewhere and I will find You. Or as Michelangelo put it, “In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.”
Or, as my preferred Michelangelo says, Cowabunga!
I think “Cowabunga” is a better fit for yours truly.
